Well guys there are some points that pi** me off concerning ripping and stuff.

1. It's said if the used stock comes from deviantART it's a ripping case.
... my 2 words on that: Well if the deviant only acts over graphic forums like DA and has it's copyright on it > OK ! DON'T USE IT !

But you all shall have a wider look on images. Very popular graphicartists have accounts everywhere. And deviantART is one of the lesser famous (though it's pretty cool and good and everything) forums.
One of the top notch forums concerning CGart is the 'CG-Society'... www.cgtalk.com...
So a very famous artist would have probably accounts at DA, CG-talk and GFXartist, epilogue.net and.... and...

the point here is that ppl that famous are also producing art for gaming sites or Trading Card Games or other fantasy and gaming sites... they sell their art to these companies and they do wallpapers for the public for common download. So these arts are free to sig after common unwritten 'siglaw' ;p

2. And you shall think carefully before pointing the finger at someone, says he or she is ripping... accusing someone as ripper is an image damage causing thing and you should know exactly with proof and everything before you even think of posting a ripping accusation.

The punishment for a wrong ripping accusation should be equally high to someone who ripped for real... means if someone does a wrong ripping accusation she or he should also be banned like a ripper would be...

if someone is accused of being a ripper and the fact is that it was a wrong ripping accusation, the thread should be deleted and not be modified in just 'not guilty' . It's a shame for every designer to read her/his name under such thread just because someone with only a half brain was stupid to write such sh**.

3. Ever thought of the fashion pics which are heavily ripped? The photographers have all their copyrights on every image they show at their personal sites... but nobody cares. Sigdesigners steal stocks from flickr.com or personal photographers sites and are considered as ultracool designers with much honor muhaahaaa.
... but if a talented nobody makes cutie wuuzie animeart at deviantART it is a RIPPINGcase if someone uses it...

^ with this said there are many many ways to look at this ripping thing. You also can say it is a nonprofessional way of seeing it.
And we all give a cheer and wave our left hand to the NSL and say thanks for the DA-Ripping-Paranoia ! Hurray !
And with our right hand we wave to Planetrenders who also claim copyrights on cutting out pics from WPs and stuff ! Mwwwaah you guys are the best !

Rippingcases

1. the archetype of a ripping case was and is: To steal someones sig and claim it as yours (nowadays also using layers from psds). This is the classic ripping case under sigdesigners and it has the most weight. So don't steal anybodies sigart or your reputation is vanished.

2. using stocks with copyrights for sigs ((like DA stocks) Which is also kind of stupid because no sigdesigner sells the sigs they make. It's fanart in general, just for wearing in forums. nearly no artist would go to court with you just because you made a sig out of one of their high precious artpieces and I doubt that if they would that there would be punishment. IT's all about the SELLING ! If you steal someones art and SELL it you have a problem !)

3. Ripping by accident: You found that very nice stock, c4d, material... over google and used it not knowing at all that it was copyright protected. Well in that case there should be a forgiving staff. Remove the piece, learn and don't do again with a smile

4. Using someones largeart and claim you did it... or cut out pieces of it and claim that you made this as sig ! One of the ultraworst ripping cases that should be punished on a very high level ! DON'T DO THIS ! ... or you can give up you identity, get yourself a new ip and start completely over because your alias is burned and doomed forever

... so what can you do for not to be accused of ripping? Go to pages which provide stocks for common download and which have kinda respect and acceptance in public ....like gamewallpapers com, homepages of certain games like bungie.net or to sites that are not known to the public and who provide art which is unknown to most of the designers like foreign sites (but also take care here of copyrights).

Save the link to the site you got the pic from if you are not sure if someone stupid would see it as ripping to proove your innocence.

... and for heavens sake.... cut out your images yourself and don't use precut renders from Planetrenders and sites like that... be proud and be a sigdesigner and do it yourself

Id someones stock on deviant art gets ripped and used on a sig
shouldnt they feel proud of the fact that someone admires there work enough to use it.
Especially if there not planning on selling it.

well.... though it must be said that it's a NO NO thing to use stocks from deviantART without permission from the artists I share your feelings mate

I always say: 'Only the best get ripped' so rippers should be laughed at in the first place and not to be taken too serious... sometimes or many times it's a ripping by accident.

The hardcore rippers are rare and most of the time detected fast and banned

edit: and on a special note I like to say that sigdesigners are also advertisers. By siggin a pic the artist who did the image in her/his small chamber becomes more known.... so where's the money for us who advertise the game, fashion, unkown DA-Artist?

a pack doesn't save you from being accused to rip. It is a compilation of brushes...c4ds... pics and you don't know from whom it was taken.

My advice: Go to the designers sites directly and see if they give it free for using their art.
Stay away from packs that are made by unkown designers.
&
Stick to packs from respected ppl like emerio or INXS for example. These ppl take care normally of what goes into their packs.... and it should be normally 100% clean and safe.
Check the mate you're sleeping with It's the same in RL... don't get yourself AIDS in a digital way

edit: and if you go to DA and download a .zip file with brushes the designers made and gave free for usage then it's definetly 100% clean and NO rip ! We brushmakers often zip the data, well I don't do it but many do
