Well it depends on what you are doing.
If you are using a render look what part of them is lighter , the light goes on the same side as that.
Use a radial gradient light colour to darker colour , eg white to black , light blue to dark blue.
Once you have this set up , simple draw the gradient on a layer behind the render , this will be the base for your lighting and other things : )
Tell me if this helps and if its hard to understand tell me and ill pm you some printscreens to show you what i am on about : )

for lightning i always do that at the end, even after i get depth, (i just learned this myself)
then i either take a brush and blur it or take the radial gradient and start at my focal point, and drag it to where i want the lighting to stop, then i play around with the opacity and layer mode, sometimes i duplicate it
i hope that helps

The lighting in a piece can help you alot to be honest. I am a large piece artist, however i crop my large pieces into tag's and what not, and still throughout my artwork, i must consistantly add lighting to my pieces. A good way to get a good strong lighting without overpowering it is just throughout the focal. You can look for hint's as to where the lighting source should be ( Sort of obvious when you have a render because almost every render / stock has a lighting hint on the focal ).
I hope that helped you to some degree.

I agree with Alphabet.......A soft brush on soft light 80% opacity color:white will probably get the job done right.
