Opacity

Is there such thing as an opacity map or something similar ?
Like a gradient map except it goes from one amount of opacity to another !
Cause ive seen quite a few peices and thigns are like fading in or out and text is more opaque at one side than at the oher.
Its probably a noobish question but o well : )
Can anyone help ?

Sounds to me more like a layer mask with black gradient overlay.
Do you mean like the image below?
